Last week, The Wrap reported that Joe Robert Cole is nearing a deal to write the script for Black Panther. In that report, they mentioned that Marvel was taking a step back in the pursuit of a director to make sure they got the tone right first. This was later followed by the announcement that Black Panther was getting it’s release date moved up to early 2018 as a result of Ant-Man and the Wasp, which would make the need for a director even more pressing.
Now, Heroic Hollywood is reporting that Ryan Coogler is the “top contender” to take a seat in the director’s chair. Coogler is most recognized for making a great indie film in Fruitvale Station and is responsible for the next installment in the Rocky universe with Creed hitting theaters later this year.
Personally, I like the choice of Coogler since Fruitvale Station was a great emotional story and Creed looks like it will follow that trend. The duo of Coogler and Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa could make for an excellent team.
Black Panther is scheduled to hit theaters February 16, 2018.
