Massive spoiler warning: Please continue reading at your own risk as the text below could massive contain spoilers for May’s Captain America: Civil War.

You’ve been warned!

Over the past few months, rumors have been circulating regarding who will bite the dust in the highly anticipated Captain America: Civil War. Early on in production, set photos leaked showcasing a funeral within the film, hinting at the death of a fan-favorite character – one that wasn’t entirely too surprising – Peggy Carter. Shortly afterwards, reports began to hit the web, indicating that Peggy’s death wouldn’t be the only one in the film. And according to our friends over at That Hashtag Show, Marvel actually ended up filming three death scenes that could be used in the film with Scarlet Witch, War Machine, and the Falcon – as well as the reported death of Captain America, something that has been speculated to happen in Cap’s third solo outing long before Civil War was even announced.

And now, courtesy of a report from, it appears those rumors regarding Cap’s death seem to be accurate. They’ve heard from their sources that Crossbones will in fact kill Steve Rogers by the end of the film.

There have been many rumors surrounding major deaths that are set to occur in Captain America: Civil War, including a rumor that the directors shot multiple death scenes to throw rabid fans off the scent. Complicating matters even more, Civil War completed additional photography in January, allowing Marvel to further alter the nitty gritty details of the larger character arcs that will continue through the Infinity War Avengers movies.

Although at least one cut exists where Steve Rogers disappears with his Avengers to fight another day, sources close to the production confirm that (as of now) when Captain America: Civil War hits theaters, Crossbones will kill Steve Rogers by the end of the movie.

While many fans online have debated if Cap would follow the same fate as his comic book counterpart, it seems the Russo brothers and team are sticking to the comics. Like in the Fallen Son storyline (which happened to be the original name of this movie) that followed the Civil War crossover event, Crossbones (played in the movies by Frank Grillo) will be the one to do the deed.

Even more interesting? They’re reporting that Marvel has already fit Sebastian Stan for a Captain America uniform. If you’ll recall, in a recent interview, Joe Russo confirmed that Captain America will be in Avengers: Infinity War, which begins production later this year, but never specifically stated that Chris Evans would return as the character. That’s something to keep in mind here, as it would make sense then that they’ve already fit Stan for a Captain America uniform.

Another source close to the film told us that they have already fit Sebastian Stan for a Captain America costume. Like in the comics, Bucky Barnes takes on the mantle of Captain America after Steve Rogers is apparently killed. You would think the honor would go to Sam Wilson, the Falcon (and current Captain America in the comic series), but there’s Marvel movies have a penchant for characters who feel the need to make up for all the red in their ledgers.

While we won’t get any official confirmation concerning any of this until Captain America: Civil War premieres in May, it’s beginning to look as though the changes to the core line-up are already underway as Phase Three prepares to kick-off.

Captain America: Civil War will hit movie theaters on May 6th, 2016.
