While attending Slamdance Film Festival the Russo Brothers took a few minutes to talk with the folks over at the MTV podcast “Happy Sad Confused.” While much of the talk centered on their career and first film, they also spent some time discussing Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4. While they naturally tried to avoid spoilers, they did respond to the idea that time travel might serve a major role in the upcoming films.
It’s interesting, because yes, there are photos that always leak, and then there’s lots of conjecture about what those photos mean. Certainly there is a five-minute sequence in Civil War around a piece of technology that was laid in for a very specific reason. So if you go back and look at that film, you may get a hint as to a direction.
It seems pretty clear that the directors didn’t just happen to create B.A.R.F. in Civil War for that film alone. The technology was something they seeded into the narrative with an eye towards a bigger payoff. This possibility has always been present, with photos from set confirming the presence of B.A.R.F. props popping up some time ago. Those devices on the Avengers’ hands might not be time travel tethers, but instead part of the B.A.R.F. tech.
It is also possible that the Russo Brothers are playing a longer con here and purposefully misdirecting fan expectation. These guys also were part of the brain trust that flew Michael Rooker to Atlanta so he could visit set and grab some Starbucks, all as a rouse to protect plot elements for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Given that the time stone will certainly be in play during Infinity War and throwback cars have been seen on set, time travel could still happen.
In the end, we will find out in the next year or so. What do you think? Do you want to see time travel proper in the MCU? Or are you happy to keep that stuff in the world of B.A.R.F.? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
