The upcoming solo Black Panther film has long been said to be important to Avengers: Infinity War. With the recent release of the Black Panther trailer, hype for the Ryan Coogler film is at an all-time high. Therefore, it would be appropriate for the Infinity War filmmakers to take advantage of the positive word of mouth.
Directors Anthony & Joe Russo sparingly use social media platforms, generally making tongue-in-cheek joke posts. The Russo Brothers will sometimes drop hints about Infinity War, often in the form of cryptic images and videos. However, their latest post appears to be more blatant, with the directing duo scouting out some jungle plains.
A reference to the Serengeti in the post’s caption indicates that this set is meant to be somewhere in Africa. This is likely the same set from Chadwick Boseman’s recent post that confirmed his involvement in Infinity War. We know from casting calls that the production was seeking extras and stand-ins that may turn out to portray Wakandans. Additionally, we can expect to see supporting Black Panther characters such as Shuri and M’Baku in this film as well. This social media post from the Russos is essentially their announcement that filming on some sort of Wakanda sequence has begun.
With Black Panther being the last MCU film before the long-anticipated Infinity War, it is safe to say that there will be some direct set-up between the two films. Perhaps Wakanda will have a more visible role in the world after the events of Black Panther, especially as the threat of Thanos looms over. The only Infinity Stone left unaccounted for as of now is the Soul Stone – and a recent Entertainment Weekly breakdown of the Black Panther trailer emphasizes that spirituality will be a key element in the film. One could speculate that Wakanda is hiding something that Thanos seeks.
What role do you expect Wakanda to have in Avengers: Infinity War? Will Thanos have a reason to take interest in this isolationist nation? Let us know in the comments!
