Spoilers for Black Panther and Infinity War below!!! Read at your own peril
Black Panther has now been released all over the world including the US of A, leaving Avengers: Infinity War as the MCU film next in line. And one burning question that’s being asked right now pertaining to the third Avengers film is whether the last Infinity Stone – the Soul Stone – WAS in Wakanda the whole time. Speaking to IGN, Ryan Coogler finally settled the score about the elusive Soul Stone.
I love the Infinity Stones as much as any comic book fan, it’s just Wakanda already has its thing, which is Vibranium. For us, that was special enough, so to throw in something like another special thing didn’t feel right. It felt like we should stick with our one MacGuffin for the country and explore that, let that be the important thing because, frankly we didn’t need to have another piece like that. [Marvel Studios] never really was interested in putting a stone in there, either.
It’s been a long-standing theory that the Soul Stone may be housed in Wakanda, given the culture’s connection to the spirit world. If you’ve seen the film, you know that they dabble in aspects of the afterlife a lot and use a mystical object called the Heart-Shaped Herb to access the supernatural plane. The theory is certainly warranted given all the facts.
So why the hell does Wakanda have anything to do with Thanos’ war against the universe? Well, an image of the Avengers: Infinity War Lego box set tells a whole different story behind Thanos’ siege of Wakanda. Without getting too explicit about it, there is something in Wakanda that Thanos desperately needs that isn’t the Soul Stone. He needs it bad that he sends an entire army of Outriders just to help him get it. Now while Lego sets have been wrong from time to time, they usually get plot details right.
