While S.H.I.E.L.D. never went away on the TV side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe its absence has been sorely apparent on the movie side of the MCU. As anyone who watches Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. knows, following the events in Captain America: Winter Soldier, the S.H.I.E.L.D. audiences had come to know was destroyed and, to the world at large, the agency was shuttered and its director, Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury was presumed dead (but was actually wandering the world).

In actuality, S.H.I.E.L.D. was simply pared down, a new director was installed and the loyal agents went on protecting a world that didn’t know they existed. PLUS, there was a SECOND S.H.I.E.L.D. organization that ultimately merged with the Coulson-directed one. So, on the small screen, there was no shortage of S.H.I.E.L.D.s.

In the movies, though, S.H.I.E.L.D. was noticeably absent during a time they could have been most useful (what there being a superhero Civil War and all). ComingSoon.net, at a press event for Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children at which Jackson was appearing, got to ask him if there was, indeed, “…still a place for S.H.I.E.L.D. within the MCU?” (Though, I admit to not feeling the question was accurate since S.H.I.E.L.D. never left the MCU, just the film side of the MCU…the question as phrased makes the tv side seem…less than.)

Samuel L. Jackson: Yeah! For sure, definitely. Why wouldn’t there be? There’s some way of fixing what they created, and hopefully somebody has that going on or Nick Fury is out there — wherever he is, probably hanging out with Jules and walking the world — figuring out what happened and how it got to that particular place. Maybe they’ll find out that all that was part of a ruse to get to something else also. That would be great. They’ll bring me back somehow, some way, for some reason. I mean, they didn’t have me around to referee the kids when they didn’t go to their rooms and got in this big old fight. We’ll see what happens.

The ever-positive Jackson seems pretty sure that Fury’s time in the MCU isn’t over (and, really, no one in the audience really thought it was either). Since it does appear that the number of cast members in Avengers: Infinity War is going to be a bit on the large side, and events in that film are going to rattle the world some, the reemergence of S.H.I.E.L.D., Fury, and (c’mon!) Coulson to the hero community at large seems a certainty.

(It’s worth nothing that Jackson also didn’t seem to buy into “the return of S.H.I.E.L.D. to the MCU” phrasing of the question by the interviewer because he answered it as if he were asked if NICK FURY were returning to the MCU. He was actually gone! S.H.I.E.L.D. never was.)

Still, despite the seemingly certain return, we’ve got a while to wait. Avengers: Infinity War is scheduled for release on May 4, 2018, and anything could happen in those 20 months (after all, that’s TWO full seasons of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.)

What do you think? Is Fury coming back? Is S.H.I.E.L.D.? Will the rest of the MCU (aside from Lady Sif, obviously) finally find out Coulson is alive and well? Let’s hear from you below.
