S.H.I.E.L.D. was the glue that kept all the Marvel films connected until the organization fell apart in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Yet, while Agent Coulson continues his adventures on TV, Nick Fury continued his role throughout the films with his last appearance being in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. It is still uncertain if he will be appearing in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War and its sequel, but we do know that he will have a large role in next year’s Captain Marvel. The film will take place in the 90s which made many wondered in what capacity we can expect the master spy to appear. In an interview with the AV Club, Samuel L. Jackson revealed that the film may not only be an origin story for Carol Danvers but also for Nick Fury – who may have just filmed the first Captain Marvel scene BTW.

But we’re going back now, and I meet Captain Marvel in more of an origin story. You’ll see Nick Fury with another guy’s face, somebody that’s got two eyes, so that’s a whole big deal. You’ll see. It’s prior to the eye injury, no eye patch.

The events of The Winter Soldier did point to a major event in Fury’s life leading to the loss of his eye.  What is rather interesting is how he says that we will see Nick Fury with another guy’s face. One would easily think he just means that he will have both eyes but it almost would point to a re-casting of a younger actor in the role. Captain Marvel takes place between Infinity War and its unnamed sequel, which could point to the story acting as a flashback. It would make sense that we see the Nick Fury played by Samuel L. Jackson talk about his meeting with Danvers in the past as we see a younger actor portray the role during these flashbacks. It could also work as an interlude to her role in the MCU building up to her appearance in the Avengers sequel. It also makes you wonder if we can expect the appearance of a younger actor playing Phil Coulson if he alongside the rest of S.H.I.E.L.D. has a role in the film.

One thing that is rather disheartening is that the actor may have confirmed that his time in the MCU is coming to an end. Jackson had one of the longest contracts that involved him being part of nine films and it seems that it is coming to an end with his appearance in Captain Marvel.

I’m sort of the glue that holds all these guys together. I got them into the organization, into S.H.I.E.L.D., and every now and then I show up to remind them that S.H.I.E.L.D. has a purpose. It’s been a good job. It was a nine-picture deal. I did it. It was good.

The film has already started production and there is always the possibility for him to extend his contract if there are any interesting projects fitting for the character. The recently announced Black Widow film would sound like a perfect place for him to return but for now, we can only speculate. If they do in fact cast a younger actor as Nick Fury for Captain Marvel, there is also the possibility that they may include a few more films that take place in the past to explore the MCU’s history. Ant-Man has revealed a lot of superhero activities that took place in the past and who knows how many secrets S.H.I.E.L.D. was involved with. It would certainly be one way to keep the character alive in the franchise even if Samuel L. Jackson decides he is truly done with the franchise.

What are your thoughts on the matter? If you had the choice who do you think could play a younger Nick Fury?
