Fans were surprised at the sudden departure of Doctor Strange Scott Derrickson from the film’s highly-anticipated sequel but were even more surprised at the subsequent reports saying that famed director Sam Raimi was in talks to take over the reins. Now, Raimi himself has confirmed the report via an interview with Coming Soon where he shared his excitement taking on the property.
I loved Doctor Strange as a kid, but he was always after Spider-Man and Batman for me, he was probably at number five for me of great comic book characters. He was so original, but when we had that moment in Spider-Man 2 I had no idea that we would ever be making a Doctor Strange movie, so it was really funny to me that coincidentally that line was in the movie. I gotta say I wish we had the foresight to know that I was going to be involved in the project.
As a huge Raimi fan, this is exciting news. His last statement is particularly interesting as it could mean he’s somewhat dissatisfied coming so late into the process when new rewrites are already being done for the film. Raimi is in many ways one of the remaining auteurs in Hollywood and it would have been amazing to see what he could have cooked up if he had been part of the process since Day 1. Nonetheless, with all these delays and downtime, I hope that he manages to inject more of his touch into the development process.
