Here’s something I still didn’t notice after my 4th Avengers: Infinity War viewing: Scarlet Witch no longer has her Eastern European accent. In the midst of all the chaos and emotion, I honestly didn’t notice that Wanda was now speaking with an American accent. This sudden departure from her distinct European accent has been the butt of some jokes poking fun at how the filmmakers happened to forget about Wanda’s ethnicity. Well, it turns out the Russos have an explanation for it. Speaking with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, they said:

She is acclimating. We intentionally tried to strip that accent away for a couple of reasons. One is that you’ll notice at the beginning of Civil War, Black Widow is training her how to be a spy. Two, she has now been on the run and one of the most distinguishing characteristics she has is her accent. So if you’re going to try to disguise yourself and not be caught, you’re going to try to limit those trigger warnings that would make it easy for someone to identify you which would be inclusive of her accent.

It’s hard not think about this sudden change as an accidental fumble during the production. Regardless, that’s a pretty good and logical explanation by the Russos. Of course, it makes sense for Wanda to learn how to blend in with the world now that she and the rest of Team Cap are wanted by the world at large. It’s a nuanced aspect of character development made more meaningful by Wanda’s stint as a force for good. I’m watching the film for a 5th time tomorrow so I better pay attention to her accent then.
