As the Infinity Saga comes to a close, Phase 4 is set to begin a new chapter of storytelling for the Marvel Cinematic Universe and it kicks off with Black Widow when it premieres next May. We have yet to know the plot details of the movie but we all know that this movie is a prequel and it will dig deep on the KGB assassin’s past. We also knew from San Diego Comic-Con that the movie will take place after the events of Captain America Civil War.

And now, Scarlett Johansson, who plays the titular character and who is also an executive producer of the film, sat down with Hollywood Reporter to reveal exciting details about the Phase 4 movie. She reveals that she is excited about the prospect of having the daunting task of opening MCU’s phase 4 slate as well as the summer movie season of 2020.

The movie packs a big punch. If that slot is reserved for movies that pack a big punch, then we’re in a good, good space.

Not only is the film a landmark for Natasha Romanoff but it’s a huge step for Johansson as well as it marks her first producing credit on a major blockbuster film. Not only is she kicking ass in front of the camera but she’s been hands-on with story, casting, and directorial decisions as well.

I feel like I’m in control of the destiny of this film, which gives me a lot more peace of mind.

She further delved on the Black Widow character and shared what it’s like playing the character for a long time now.

I know her better than anybody. What was her childhood like? What is her relationship to figures of authority? This character is gritty and multi-dimensional but has a lot of trauma and has led an unexamined life. In order to operate at this elite level, she has probably had to push away a lot of stuff.”

It is intriguing that Johansson touched on the aspect of the character’s relationship to the government which seemingly confirms that she is on the run when we catch up on her when the movie starts. Given that the movie will dive deep into Romanoff’s past, it will be interesting to explore more of the red in her ledger and to have a better understanding of her motivations regarding her sacrifice in Vormir during the Time Heist at Avengers Endgame.
