Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson is expected to return for the second outing of the incredibly successful franchise. Doctor Strange gave the Marvel Cinematic Universe its first taste of the mystical side of Marvel, while also telling the origin story of this fascinating character. While Doctor Strange is next slated to appear in Avengers: Infinity War, a second solo film can also be expected to follow.

According to Deadline who just broke the story that Derrickson would be helming the pilot episode of Hulu’s adaptation of the acclaimed graphic novel from Joe Hill, Locke and Key, the horror visionary will indeed return to direct the Strange sequel.

A vast portion of the success of Doctor Strange can be attributed to its director, Scott Derrickson. The special effects are often considered to be one of the most challenging parts of bringing the Sorcerer Supreme to the big screen. The effects are often awe-inspiring and venture into the psychedelic. But Derrickson met the challenge with ease, creating a kaleidoscope world and a final battle which has been compared to Inception.

Derrickson’s return wouldn’t be an unexpected move for the MCU, given that many of the directors who have lead widely successful projects for the studio have been invited back. This list includes James Gunn‘s return for Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2, and his recent announcement that he will indeed be returning for the third installment as well. Also included in that list are the Russo brothers, who directed both Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War. They have been confirmed as returning to head up Avengers: Infinity War. Benedict Cumberpatch, who brought Doctor Strange to life on the big screen, has also expressed his desire to work with Derrickson on the sequel.

He is a natural to return to this franchise, given his handling of the vivid special effects. His direction set Doctor Strange as a leader among the other Marvel movies, even earning an Academy Award nomination for visual effects. Derrickson was also able to beautifully show the journey of self-discovery which leads Stephen Strange to embrace the mystical and eventually sees him become the Sorcerer Supreme.
