Even though Phase 3 of the MCU has just begun, think back to a time in 2013 where The Avengers was the last Marvel movie you saw and Iron Man 3 was right around the corner. There were plenty of reasons to be excited about the prospects of a third Iron Man, but surprisingly it is a controversial movie among fans. The main reason why was the build up of Ben Kingsley portraying the Mandarin. Fans did not get upset about changing the Mandarin from a stereotypical racist character, but they did take issue with the third act reveal- Kingsley was actually a lowly actor named Trevor Slattery who was only acting the part.
Once we all found out the truth behind Kingsley’s character, you either hated the twist or if you were like me, you just didn’t care that much. Those that did hate it, however, made their voices heard, which is why the last One-Shot we’ve received was centered around the real Mandarin. Marvel debuted All Hail The King on the Iron Man 3 DVD and director Shane Black talked about why this short was made. He told UPROXX that yes, it was to apologize for the previous mistake.
Marvel saw so many negative things they made a whole other movie just to apologize called Hail to the King. In which they said, “No, no, the Mandarin is still alive. That wasn’t him. There’s a real Mandarin.” The only reason they made that was an apology to fans who were so angry.
We all thought they’d eat it up because it never occurred to us the Mandarin is as iconic to people as, say, the Joker in Batman.
They just wanted to see the magic rings shoot lasers.
With Slattery being taken by the Ten Rings to meet the real Mandarin, we are all waiting to see the true interpretation of the character. Is this something that the continually teased Iron Man 4 could dive into? We can only hope.
