The buzz surrounding this fifth season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and its upcoming 100th episode is strong as ever. And as we draw closer to that monumental centennial episode, talk is now slowly shifting towards what is in store in the episodes beyond that, particularly, the season five finale. Showrunners Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen spoke to TV Line to reveal that not only are they writing the finale as a season-ender but they’re also writing it as a potential conclusion for the series should it not get renewed.
“We are in process [of writing the finale],” co-showrunner Jed Whedon told TVLine on Saturday at the show’s Episode 100 celebration. Added co-showrunner Maurisa Tancharoen: “We know what it is.” And what it is, Tancharoen said, could serve as “either” a season or series finale. Whedon elaborated, “Yeah, we’re ready for if this is the end. We’re definitely going to make it rewarding either way.”
Despite a reasonable improvement in its ratings and a well-received 5th season from fans, the future of the series in ABC aka Always Be Cancelling is uncertain at best. Some fans are clamoring for it to be moved to a streaming service, preferably Disney’s own when they officially launch next year. Regardless of whether news of a renewal drops, to know that the showrunners are already preparing for a worst-case scenario for a well-loved show by writing the end on their own terms is assuring and somewhat exciting.
