TCA’s winter press tour is underway and we finally get some more news on ABC’s Marvel shows Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Inhumans. As pointed out in a previous article, ABC head Channing Dungey voiced the network’s overall disappointment with the show’s performance, which seems like a safe bet that the show might get canceled this season. TV ratings are still at a constant decline and with ABC seeming cautious towards adding a new Marvel show to their roster, it also makes one wonder if SHIELD will face some issues. Dungey did talk about the show and it seems that discussions are certainly taking place about what direction the sixth season could take if it was given a renewal.
Creatively this season, I honestly think is the strongest that it’s ever been, and we’ve been really excited about what the producers are talking about for the second half of the season.
She pointed out that before they make any decisions about the show’s sixth season they are waiting for the show’s producers and showrunners will present. It will be interesting to see if they can find some idea to top the SHIELD agents being in space, but with Marvel’s vast mythology anything is possible. The show has been quite consistent in its ratings so far and if it manages to keep it up we may see it return for a sixth season. Once Upon a Time also shares a similar situation when it comes to its upcoming renewal even though most of its cast left the show after the last season ended. Some freshman shows have already been canceled and only The Good Doctor has really been a stand-out so far this season for ABC. There is a chance for it to return, as TVbytheNumbers’ Cancel Bear would still put the show at a likely renewal, but only if it can remain consistent due to it performing well enough among a lackluster Friday line-up.
What are your thoughts? Do you think SHIELD will be renewed? What are your hopes for a sixth season?
