As 2016 comes to an end and we brace ourselves for the coming of a new year, it’s important to take stock and assess what you’re thankful for. Like many Marvel fans, I’ve got a lot to be grateful for. Civil War and Doctor Strange were great and Luke Cage was a lot of fun. And with 2017 coming right around the corner we’ll have even more reason to give thanks with the arrival of both Iron Fist and The Defenders.

The Defenders is especially exciting because we’ll get to see all of our favorite Netflix heroes team-up. But of course, with that many awesome heroes, they’d need a spectacular villain and an amazing actor to bring said villain to life. Honestly, out of all of the casting decisions that Marvel has made of late, bringing in Sigourney Weaver as the big bad against the Defenders is an inspired choice. Speaking to, Weaver spoke enthusiastically about the project’s talented cast and Marvel’s decision to film it’s Netflix shows in New York City.

“It has a wonderful cast, and we’re doing it right here in New York, which means a lot to me,” Weaver said. “Basically the four heroes come up against this really nice woman, who I’m playing,” she joked. “It’s been a blast and I really love my character. I love the shows, too, which I wasn’t familiar with before doing this. A real love letter to New York. To me they’re not superheroes; they’re people with a gift. It’s just a different scale, and I’m really enjoying the scale of it. The apocalyptic thing is a little harder for me to understand.”

Exactly what she means by “apocalyptic” is anyone’s guess. While fans have been frantically trying to decipher what role the “Alien” actress is portraying – even the gang at the MCU Exchange have offered our two cents – it is still unknown exactly what form her villain will take. But whoever she’s playing is apparently going to be contained to the TV side of the MCU divide.

“When we asked whether she’d like to also play a role in the Marvel movies, Weaver paused for a beat, then replied, “Well… I’m very happy being in the Marvel with a small “m”.

The Defenders drops at an as of yet unannounced date next year. Presumably, it will be sometime after Iron Fist’s March 17th debut. So keep your eyes open and keep coming to the MCU Exchange for all of your Marvel news.
