By far and away, one of the most hotly anticipated characters to debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is Misty Knight, who will be prominently featured in Netflix’s Luke Cage. Misty Knight will be played by Simone Missick, who has received nothing but rave reviews for her turn as the popular heroine, so much so that there have even been rumors surrounding a possible Misty Knight spin-off show.
At the Television Academy’s fourth annual Dynamic and Diverse Celebration, Missick spoke with Red Carpet Report, where she dished on her feelings about playing “the first black, female superhero in the history of Marvel.”
It is overwhelming… I have nieces and nephews… who I know will be able to see this… and say ‘wow, I can be strong, I can be tough’… and all the little girls all over the world to be able to have that, to have someone that they can look up to… It’s cool to have something [like Misty] to look up to.
While we don’t know for sure if we will ever see Misty Knight gain her bionic arm, it has been hinted at by Missick, and will likely be hinted at in the show as well, a la Trish Walker in Jessica Jones.
Missick also revealed that the show will focus on Cage, who is on the run, and Knight trying to figure out if they are “on each other’s side.” She later added that she show is not age appropriate for her young nieces and nephews, and if this show is anything like Jessica Jones or Daredevil, that comes as no surprise.
To top it all off, Missick credited Luke Cage as being “the best superhero show featuring superheroes of color that you will ever see.” Right now, that’s a pretty short list, but an encouraging comment nonetheless.
Luke Cage drops on Netflix on September 30th, and stars Mike Colter (Luke Cage), Simone Missick (Misty Knight), Alfre Woodard (Mariah Dillard), Mahershala Ali (Cornell Stokes), Theo Rossi (Shades Alvarez), and Erik LaRay (Willis Stryker).
