Recently the Webby Award winners were announced and an MCU property was among the winners. For those new to the Webbys, they are a massively broad series of awards for excellence in web pages and online content. Categories include things like web series, but also includes design and functionality of sites across literally hundreds of categories. ABC’s short web series Slingshot, a spinoff from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., was the winner in the category of “Drama: Long Form or Series.”
(Readers might find that category a bit odd, as nothing about the brief web series felt “long form.” The criteria only require a series of episodes in which one of the episodes clocks in over five minutes long. Most web based series are not particularly lengthy.)
The win should excite MCU fans for two reasons. One, it is nice whenever MCU properties get recognition by some sort of awards. While many of the mainstream awards, such as the Oscars and Emmys, have been slow to recognize Marvel’s work, the Webbys join the Peabody Awards as an entity seeing the good work that is done in the MCU. Two, this category is one which uses user votes to determine the winner. The support behind Slingshot is another sign of how devoted the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. fan community is. Clearly, those who love the show went out of their way to vote for Yoyo’s solo exploits. This should send two messages to the folks at ABC: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has an energetic fan base and doing another web series like this would be a good idea. As Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. still sits in uncertain territory concerning whether or not ABC will pick it up for a fifth season, though some reports suggest it will get another year, any good news is welcome news.
Have you sat down and watched the Slingshot web series? What do you think of it? What other characters might you want to see in their own solo web series? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
