Wayne Gretzky once said you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take, a quote that real risk takers take to heart. Risk takers like Sony. The studio whose biggest moneymaker in 2016 was Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 is keen on making its spin-off Spider-verse happen via a Morbius, the Living Vampire film that’s in development, according to a new report by The Hollywood Reporter.
The film will be the third Spider-verse spin-off in the works, following Venom and Silver & Black, projects that have admittedly talented people behind them. At the helm of the development are Power Rangers, The Last Witch Hunter, Dracula Untold, and Gods of Egypt screenwriters Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama, so it’s already a guaranteed box-office hit, critical darling, and Oscar winner.
Joking aside, this film is merely in the development phase. There’s no guarantee that this film ever gets greenlit given how the fruits of their Spider-verse projects have yet to be reaped. If Sony is smart, they should wait to see how Venom and Silver & Black fare before expanding their Spider-Verse. Just look at what happened to the Universal Monsters franchise last week.
