Spider-Man: Far From Home plays multiple roles. It is the ending or rather epilogue of the Infinity Saga, rounds out the MCU’s third phase and also kicks off the next phase of films. These are some massive shoes to fill and Spider-Man is the perfect character to continue the MCU legacy. In a way, the film does not only play a key role in defining the future but also carries on what had been established long before the MCU started.
Before venturing further, be aware we will be spoiling some massive reveals from the post-credit sequence. Only continue at your own risk.
This might be Marvel Studios best surprise since the Samuel L. Jackson appeared in the Iron Man post-credit sequence. Mysterio left a message for the world to hear and he ended up sending a message to a very well-known news organization. The Daily Bugle finally makes his return and with it J. Jonah Jameson. J.K. Simmons returns to the role he once played in the original Spider-Man trilogy by Sam Raimi. It was a massive surprise and something fans were wishing to see happen for quite some time. Director Jon Watts revealed in a recent press junket how they were able to sneak in that cameo without anyone noticing.
“That was always the plan because we knew that we wanted to reveal Peter’s identity, and we wanted to bring in this idea of the news and not being sure exactly what you can believe or not believe. And it was always going to be him, but we didn’t want to say anything to him or to anyone because we didn’t want any press to leak out about it, via his agents or whatever. So we waited until the very, very last second and called him up, and he came by and he was, ‘Wait, what? You want me to do what?’ It took him a second to understand, but as we pitched the idea he was totally on board and he really loved getting to be the person who finally outs Peter Parker.”
According to Watts, they snuck him into a Disney conference room with a green screen to shoot the sequence. It was brief but it got the job done in establishing TheDailybugle.net as an InfoWars-esque news show. Peter finally accepted his role as Spider-Man and was able to confess to MJ. Now, at the high-point, the classic Parker luck drags him back down and Mysterio reveals his identity to the world. Not only does the post-credit sequence for Far From Home echo the post-credit sequence of Homecoming but also pushes Spidey back into the “menace” role he had in the comics. Watts also teases that all options are on the table with what they have planned for the character. Especially how it opens up a lot of different possibilities with a character being portrayed in two different universes. Perhaps there is a Spider-Verse storyline heading our way in the future?
Did you expect the cameo? What are your hopes for the character’s future?
