Well this is a bummer! We could well have another nail in the coffin of the hopes of Spider-Man continuing on in the MCU, despite some fans speculating talks could still be ongoing after the split. According to Tom Holland, Spider-Man himself, a third movie has already been pitched at Sony – and it looks like we could be seeing that Venom crossover soon in the webslinger’s future.
In an interview with ComicBook, Holland stated that he had recently “sat down with some of our creatives. We pitched Spider-Man 3, which is going to be something very special, it’s going to be something very different.” If Sony has already pitched a new Spider-Man film outside of the MCU, it seems very unlikely those talks are still ongoing – unless this is another negotiation tactic, of course.
Holland also stated that the franchise is “only going to get bigger and better from here” – and teased future crossovers:
The ideas we have for how we can expand the Spider-Man world and bring new characters into it, and crossover with other people, it’s really exciting. […] And it’s only going to get bigger and better from here, which is great.”
This almost certainly means that long-rumored Spider-Man and Venom crossover is going to happen, which isn’t exactly a surprise – but again, the fact it’s already been discussed isn’t a good sign for the webslinger’s future in the MCU.
There is always the chance that talks between Disney and Sony could continue, but given that a Spider-Man: Far From Home sequel already has writers, Kevin Feige’s recent comments, and now the fact it seems Sony has already planned out their next steps with the franchise, that possibility seems slimmer by the day.
