Last night we got the first look at Doctor Strange courtesy ofa fantastic teaser trailer. (You can read our breakdown of the trailer later today.) And it’s safe to say fans will be talking about that teaser trailer for some time. It’s a whole new world within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, full of mysticism and a pretty amazing cast. While the trailer was just a teaser of what’s to come and focused mainly on Doctor Strange himself, portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch, we did get a rather good glimpse at his mentor: Tilda Swinton‘s bald The Ancient One.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the actress worked to keep it a secret that her character would be bald in the film. While Marvel is usually the deciding factor on what can be shared, in this case, Swinton asked Kevin Feige at Marvel to keep this detail under wraps.
“She said, ‘I need to talk to you about something,’” Feige explained at the time. “I said, ‘Do you not want him to say you’re bald?’ ‘That would be wonderful.’ ‘Okay. I’ll ask.’”
Swinton, herself, thought this was very important.
“You’re not going to talk about what I look like, because we mustn’t!” she insisted. “Please! It would be such fun if people don’t know anything.”
It seems that Marvel’s tendency towards keeping secrets is rubbing off on their cast! As far as why Swinton’s character is bald, there is more to it than honoring the Ancient One in the comics.
“I think it’s all in the eye of the beholder,” said the actress about her character’s sexual identity. “You know, your gender comes out of the mouth of the person who’s addressing you.”
With a more androgynous look, there is more mystery to the character, who will be teaching Strange about the other realms.
“Look, she’s a chameleon in everything she does,” said Feige of the actress. “She can harness this amazing androgynous sense. So, we use the term ‘her’ and ‘she’ in the film. But, other than that, it’s very androgynous. Because it doesn’t matter.”
Swinton seems to be fully invested in her character, having also helped come up with her look.
“It’s something that I was so happy to develop with Marvel,” she said. “They were so welcoming and we cooked it all up together.”
It’s exciting to see an actor take such an interest in the character they are portraying. Everything about Doctor Strange looks fantastic so far, and we can’t wait to see the final product on November 4, 2016. Until then, how many times have you watched the trailer?
