Only last month we finally found out what the Marvel Cinematic Universe has in store for us going forward in 2020 and 2021. There were many known projects and quite a few nice surprises thrown in as well. The biggest surprise was actually spiled ahead of the Marvel Studios panel at SDCC as Taika Waititi was confirmed to return to direct a fourth Thor film. The SDCC panel did reveal that the fourth Thor film would be titled Thor: Love and Thunder. It is quite a unique title but very fitting given Waititi‘s personal twist added to the Thor mythos in Thor: Ragnarok. It is the final film in the upcoming fourth phase of the MCU, so there is still time until production would start. Well, Waititi will be quite busy until then as he is soon releasing his film Jojo Rabbit and will be directing a project for Fox Searchlight later this year. His upcoming project Next Goal Wins will shoot in fall, which now also reveals that Love and Thunder will enter production at the start of 2020.
That is not all though, as Deadline’s report on Waititi‘s film also confirmed that he has already finished the script for Thor: Love and Thunder. There is a good chance that the script might still get some adaptions or re-writes over time. The director is quite well-known for loving to improvise a lot of scenes so the film may change quite a bit from his current version as he gets closer to the 2020 production. It will be interesting to see how it ties into Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as Thor is joining the Guardians at the end of Avengers: Endgame. James Gunn‘s script has also been finished for quite some time and the drama delayed its production to the earliest of 2020. Perhaps they have also coordinated and adapted their scripts in relation to the events of Endgame and the Guardians 3 delay. Still, the script has already been completed might also be the reason they revealed some major plot elements at SDCC, such as Jane Foster becoming the Mighty Thor.
