While Josh Brolin‘s Thanos was a key part of both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, neither film really delved too heavily into the Mad Titan’s early life, beyond a short monologue about his home planet Titan during Infinity War. However, it appears that wasn’t always the case, as a new piece of concept art from artist Ryan Lang has made its way online, showing a much younger Thanos with his family.

The art gives us a first look at Thanos’ parents, A’lars and Sui-San, and what appears to be a younger sibling, likely intended to be Eros, Thanos’ brother from the comics. In Lang‘s since-deleted Instagram post, he captioned the piece saying he was asked to “visualize what Eternals looked like next to a young Thanos. I think there was a flashback at one point.” This would line up with Anthony Russo‘s comments from last year, where he revealed that a flashback to Thanos’ early life was discussed for Infinity War, but ultimately was scrapped.

While this concept was unfortunately never realized on screen, we will be seeing Thanos’ kin in next years The Eternals, with early casting breakdowns pointing towards Eros making an appearance – so it’s very possible we could well see some of Thanos’ earlier life in this film instead. Whether Lang‘s design for the Eternals will remain is unclear at this point mattressmakers.com, but either way it’s pretty interesting to get an idea of what a young Thanos and his family could have looked like!

Marvel’s The Eternals will be directed by Chloé Zhao, and is expected to release in 2020.
