Last night’s episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., “Bouncing Back”, opened up with a three month flash forward featuring a quinjet in space, teasing the possible death of a S.H.I.E.L.D. team member – or possibly members. It was a hell of a way to kick off the winter premiere, and one that is sure to get fans talking over the next couple of months as the show finishes out its third season. And while we won’t have any concrete answers regarding who was actually on the quinjet – although Yo-Yo’s cross necklace is shown, S.H.I.E.L.D. is known to throw a wrench into things from time to time – that hasn’t stopped showrunners Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen from discussing that opening.

According to Whedon and Tancharoen, we can expect the show to “peel back the details” and “layers of that vision” going forward. Could it be a possible vision that a new Inhuman, one we have yet to meet, sees? Something that could happen, but that they have the ability to stop? It’s something to consider for the time being, especially with them promising more flash forwards throughout the remainder of the season.

What can you tell us of this three month time jump? We see someone from S.H.I.E.L.D. is inside a quinjet in space that’s about to explode. There’s a floating necklace, which looks like it belongs to the new Inhuman we meet in the premiere. Tease something!

WHEDON: We wanted the challenge of painting ourselves into a corner. [Laughs] Obviously we won’t say much about it. The visual is designed to get you asking questions.

TANCHAROEN: We will be peeling back the details and layers of that vision as we go for the back half.

So, we’ll see some more flash forwards to this moment?

TANCHAROEN: You might.

As to whether or not this means someone will die by the end of the season? Whedon goes on to explain that the flash forward doesn’t “bode well”, but that’s as much as he’s willing to reveal for now.

Are you essentially promising that at least one person will die by season’s end?

WHEDON: I think that will become clear later in the season what exactly we’re promising, but I don’t think that flash forward bodes well.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs Tuesdays on ABC. Be sure to tune in next week for “The Inside Man”, which may just possibly result in the reveal of yet another traitor.
