With Marvel confirming the news via press release, Jeph Loeb had the following to say about the series.
We want to thank the fans who are clamoring for more of Jon’s stunning and powerful performance as Frank Castle from Marvel’s Daredevil. Now combined with Showrunner Steve Lightfoot’s compelling writing, we’re thrilled to bring Marvel’s The Punisher to Netflix.
The other half of this announcement comes via Netflix and here is what Netflix Vice President of Original Content’s Cindy Holland had to say about what made them green light the series.
Jon hooked our global audience with his performance as Frank Castle from the moment he stepped on screen in Marvel’s Daredevil, and we are looking forward to seeing more of him in this role under the vision of Steve Lightfoot.
As for the new showrunner attached to the series, here is what Steve Lightfoot had to say about joining the project.
For me, the complexity and unpredictability of Frank Castle make him an incredibly compelling character and I couldn’t be more excited to dive into his world. After watching Jon’s performance in Marvel’s Daredevil I could not be more excited to be working with him to further develop and progress the story of this anti-hero in a show of his own.

When it comes to Frank Castle, aka The Punisher, there’s no denying his popularity among Marvel fans. He’s a character many have been eager to see make his way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe for some time, and with the character officially making his MCU debut in the second season of Daredevil, it’s safe to say fans have gotten their wish. However, it now looks as though there’s plenty of Frank Castle still to come our way as Marvel and Netflix are now moving forward with the reported Punisher spin-off series, something that Marvel Television head Jeph Loeb played coy about rather recently.
EW has broken the news that Netflix has ordered the spin-off series with Jon Bernthal obviously coming back to play the reckless Punisher. They have also revealed that Steve Lightfoot, best known for Hannibal, has agreed to be the showrunner of the new series. There is no word on when we can expect to see the series hit Netflix, but with Iron Fist currently filming, The Defenders filming this fall, and a second season of Jessica Jones already ordered, we might have to wait until 2018.
After watching the second season of Daredevil and seeing Bernthal bring this character to life on the small screen, I’m more than ready to see him headline his own series. He was absolutely phenomenal, and often times steals the show from Daredevil himself. If you haven’t already, be sure to check out his performance as Frank Castle/The Punisher in Daredevil which is now streaming on Netflix.
