With Captain America: Civil War set to release in May, directors Joe and Anthony Russo have begun opening up more about the upcoming film. Just yesterday, the brothers revealed where the film opens, as well as how their take on Spider-Man will vary from those before it. Now, in a recent interview with Comicbook.com, the directors have hinted at the film’s impact, and how it’ll affect not only the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but also Captain America himself.
“It’s going to be more evolved than it ever has been with in any of the films. Winter Soldier created a seismic shift in terms of the world of the Marvel Universe. This is going to create a seismic shift in the psychology of the character which is more profound. It’s a very profound shift.”
Given how much Captain America: The Winter Soldier effected the MCU, having not only destroyed S.H.I.E.L.D., but also bringing Hydra forward as a massive threat inside of the organization, it isn’t entirely shocking that Civil War will follow suit. What is interesting, however, is what Joe Russo went on to say, indicating that fans may not be prepared for what is to come in the upcoming sequel. Could the rumors (note: potential spoilers!) prove to be true?
Joe Russo added, “For us, we really are firm believers in stakes. We like movies with high highs and low lows and we just feel like you get a more well-rounded experience in that type of film. Now that we’re engaged in serialized storytelling, it starts with Winter Soldier and ends with the Infinity War movies. We feel it’s very important that those four films, Civil War, and both Infinity War movies, have a very profound effect on the audience. I think a lot of shocking things are going to happen, which is really interesting because you haven’t had this kind of… maybe other than Harry Potter, I guess you can count the Bond series… but the kind of investment over a period of time with this many characters behaving in a universe. I think our job is to send you on a very profound experience between now and 2019 and it starts with Civil War. I don’t know if people will be prepared for what this movie is going to include.”
Along with an expected seismic shift for both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Captain America, Civil War will also see the introduction of two major characters with Spider-Man and Black Panther, along with the return of Vision, a fan-favorite from Avengers: Age of Ultron. Although they’re unable to reveal too much this far out, as expected, the Russo brothers did confirm that each of these characters will have their own arcs throughout the film – something that should help to ease the worries of fans fearing there were too many characters within the film to properly introduce both Spider-Man and Black Panther.
“It’s a big movie and it includes a lot of characters,” said Joe Russo. “I think that a lot of them have really interesting arcs. I think Spider-Man in particular has a really fascinating arc.”
Anthony Russo replied, “Certainly Black Panther, who we introduce. Similarly there, introducing a character gives you a great opportunity to take them on a ride, you know?”
“Vision goes on a journey, as well,” added Joe Russo.
Captain America: Civil War is set to hit theaters on May 6th, 2016.
