Official movie merchandise can sometimes be a bitch. They reveal things way ahead of time that would otherwise have gone unnoticed. But being the site that wants our readers updated with all things MCU, here we are grudgingly reporting this. The topic at hand, this new Thor: Ragnarok Funko figure that seemingly confirms a huge connection between two characters from Ragnarok and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Spoilers obviously if you think of even scrolling further.
So yeah, that toy has Jeff Goldblum‘s Grandmaster listed as a “celestial”, making an explicit connection between him Star-Lord’s pa Ego the Living Planet. We’ve known for some time now that The Collector and the Grandmaster were to be related but their celestial lineage and relation to Ego haven’t been included in any canonical conversations. This brings up several interesting implications for their characters down the line if true. For one thing, they seem to be reconfiguring the comic book Elders into MCU celestials. Another implication is their immense power. Ego basically proclaimed himself as a god – small ‘G’ of course – and it makes us wonder whether the Grandmaster and Collector are capable of abilities on the same scale. It’d be interesting to see if their lineage comes in play in next year’s Avengers: Infinity War.
Like we mentioned in the first paragraph, it should be of note that not all toys are accurate depictions of movie events and characters. Some toy lines occasionally take creative liberties with their product (looking at you, Mandarin with the spider vehicle in Iron Man 3!) so there’s a possibility that this connection ain’t happening in the film. Regardless, it brings up a potential fun connection between two films and characters that diehard MCU fans like us live for.
