One of the more interesting things about Thor: Ragnarok (and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 for that matter) has been the change in color pallet. While many early MCU posters tended to be serious and dark, the recent stuff has added bright greens, yellows, purples, and blues into their look. Now we have another poster out of Japan and it has continued the trend.
Hela is front and center as she should be. The MCU has waited too long for a female main villain, so it makes sense they will capitalize on an actress of Cate Blanchett‘s profile serving as the big bad in Thor: Ragnarok. Director Taika Waititi has allowed this movie to get weird and has given fans the iconic headdress for Hela. It is interesting to see Marvel not only allow their films to go to more extreme, comic-centric places visually but to lead with those striking visuals in the promotional push for the franchise as well.
The other interesting thing about this poster is the inclusion of Odin. While paparazzi photos showed “homeless Odin” and fans have known for some time that he would feature in the Doctor Strange portion of the film, he’s been largely absent in the promotional materials so far. (It is quite the luxury for a film to leave an Oscar winning actor out of the promo material!) Exactly how Loki’s ouster of Odin fits into the film has yet to be seen. One would assume that he won’t be too happy when he confronts Loki for replacing him on the throne of Asgard.
