While the first trailer for Doctor Strange did a great job at getting fans talking and growing more curious about what the film would mean for the Marvel Cinematic Universe going forward, it also reignited a heated conversation regarding the casting of Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One. In a recent podcast interview, C. Robert Carghill, one of the writers behind the upcoming flick, talked about the controversy surrounding Swinton’s casting, explaining that there plenty of hurdles they had to overcome when it came to casting the Ancient One, including the ability to market the movie to China. For him, when they were able to bring someone like Swinton into the mix? It was an opportunity they couldn’t refuse. And it appears Swinton herself felt the same way. When asked what led to her wanting to be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Swinton explained that the idea intrigued her.
“Those opportunities to make films like the Narnia film, like anything from the Marvel Universe, that is going to touch generations and particularly young generations, is really worth considering,” she told me. “In both those cases, the Narnia film and this, they presented me [with] something that I was really intrigued by and I’m really happy that they did.”
Of course, while there’s no denying that Swinton is one of the best actresses currently working, for many, the idea of her tackling a role that’d been presented as that of a Tibetan male in the comics was hard to accept. However, as Swinton explains to the folks at Den of Geek, the script that she’d been given had never stated that her role was meant for an Asian male. She also goes on to explain that the reasons behind the choice to switch things up in regards to the character will be revealed when the movie is released this November.
“The script that I was presented with did not feature an Asian man for me to play, so that was never a question when I was being asked to do it,” she responded. “It all will be revealed when you see the film, I think. There are very great reasons for us to feel very settled and confident with the decisions that were made.”
Doctor Strange will hit movie theaters on November 4th, 2016.
