For many superhero fans, Tom Holland’s introduction as everyone’s favorite webhead was the highlight of Captain America: Civil War. His take on the character was young, energetic, and decked out in a version of the suit that was straight out of Steve Ditko’s early illustrations. But that was just a sample of things to come. His solo outing, Spider-Man: Homecoming, arrives on July 7th, 2017. And the world is waiting to see what he’s going to bring to his first stand alone film and beyond. At the premiere of his new film, ‘The Lost City of Z‘, Holland spoke to Variety about his enthusiasm for the wallcrawler while also admitting that Spidey’s outfit isn’t the most fun to wear.
“The suit’s not the greatest thing, but sometimes when it’s uncomfortable, you just have to remind yourself of the long list of actors that would love to be in that suit and you just go, ‘do you know what, f**k it. I’m the luckiest kid alive,’”
But besides the ill-fitting yet cool looking suit, a big part of what makes Holland’s casting so exciting is that he has extensive dancing/gymnastic skills. A causal search through his social media presence will turn up videos of him dancing, jumping, and flipping. And these skills are something he’s bringing to the table.
“I did as many [of the stunts] as I could, but there are some things legally that I couldn’t do,” said Holland. “There were stunt doubles who were all very, very talented guys who really supported me throughout the process. Whenever there was a stunt that I didn’t necessarily feel comfortable about, they would step in and show my how to do it, and coach me through the process.”
As to whether Spider-Man will appear in the forthcoming Avengers sequels, Holland indicated that while it’s possible, nothing is yet set in stone.
“It’s all up in the air,” said Holland. “I believe some sort of deal is in the mix, but I’m unclear as to what that deal is.”
As popular as Holland’s interpretation of Spider-Man already is, I’m sure we’ll see much more of him throughout the MCU. But in what capacity is anyone’s guess. He could just do a guest spot or perhaps become an Avenger himself. What do you think? Do you want to see Spider-Man join the ranks of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes? Comment below to share your thoughts.
