Recently, Tom Holland served as a guest speaker at the Dell 2017 Consumer Electronics Show to promote the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming. At the event, Holland dropped several small bits of information about the film. He mentioned his new Stark Tech suit (which was recently showcased in-depth in this video), as well as his struggles with getting used to his new threads in the film. In doing so, he gave us some new information regarding Ned Leeds (played by Jacob Batalon), his best friend in the film:

“Throughout the movie, my mentor is Tony Stark, probably best known as Iron Man. He builds me a high-tech new suit which is just filled with awesome gadgets. Let me just stress that it didn’t stretch my acting abilities to be confused by it. Luckily enough, my best friend in the movie, Ned Leeds, is a complete gamer. And using the Dell Inspiron 15 we were able to tap into the suit and find out some of its cool new exciting features.”

We’ve seen that some of the characters in the film will be very distinctly different than their comic counterparts, but this quote sheds a little more light onto Ned’s character. For those who aren’t familiar with the original comics, here’s a little history lesson. Ned Leeds was originally a reporter for the Daily Bugle back in the day, and he and Peter both vied for the heart of Betty Brant, J. Jonah Jameson’s personal assistant. Leeds was a few years older than Peter, and he ended up winning the fight for Betty’s heart. Fast forward to today, and Ned Leeds has been reimagined as Peter’s best friend at school in Homecoming. For those of you who have been following the news surrounding the film, that’s no news to you. However, what we didn’t know prior to this was that Ned will be a hardcore gamer in the film. Could this just be written into his character because of the partnership with Dell? Possibly. However, it seems more likely that Peter will need someone to bounce ideas off of for new additions to his arsenal (I’m still hoping to see some Spider-Tracers), as well as someone to help him understand his new suit. Let’s face it Tony Stark is a busy man, and he won’t be around 24/7 to help Peter figure everything out, so Ned seems like the perfect choice.
