Guardians of the Galaxy was the biggest film of 2014, and it’s sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will likely be one of the biggest films when it is released in 2017 as well. One of the most beloved parts of the original was Vin Diesel’s Groot, the massive talking, crime-fighting tree-man with a limited vocabulary.
It’s likely that you already know Groot’s gruesome fate in the original film, but good news to all the Groot fans out there: Diesel will return to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 as a highly anticipated baby version of our favorite friendly foliage.
In an interview with Collider, Diesel explained what viewers should expect from baby Groot when he hits the big screen:
He couldn’t be more naive as Baby Groot. I always think of the Groot that we saw on the first Guardians as a college-level Groot, so he’s not fully grown yet, but he’s a man. And once he sacrifices himself at the end of the movie, now he has to start all over, so to speak, but we’re gonna see this goofy, adorable, baby Groot thing running around the screen and just learning as he goes.
Diesel also mentioned that he’d recorded his signature line in several more languages this time than he did last time around. Could this be an indication of Groot receiving an even larger role? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
Guardian of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is due to hit theaters on May 5, 2017, and stars Chris Pratt (Peter Quill/Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Bradley Cooper (Rocket), Dave Bautista (Drax), Kurt Russel (Ego), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Elizabeth Debicki (Ayesha), Pom Klementieff (Mantis), Michael Rooker (Yondu), Glenn Close (Nova Prime), and Sylvester Stallone alongside Vin Diesel.
