Set photos taken by Just Jared reveal the MCU debut of S.W.O.R.D. (Sentient World Observation and Response Department), the sister organization of S.H.I.E.L.D. which has been inactive since Captain America: The Winter Soldier. S.W.O.R.D. deals largely with cosmic threats towards Earth. This is likely, as many have guessed, where Nick Fury was during the post-credit scene of Spider-Man: Far From Home. In outer space surrounded by Skrulls on a Skrull vessel and in command. It seems that S.W.O.R.D. in the MCU will founded by Nick Fury and the Skrulls from Captain Marvel.
These set photos also reveal that a now adult Monica Rambeau, played by Teynoah Parris, has joined the organization. Likely in order to follow in her auntie Carol’s footsteps. Additionally, Elizabeth Olsen can also be seen on this S.W.O.R.D. office setting alongside Parris.
However, S.W.O.R.D. deals primarily with cosmic threats in the comics, unlike S.H.I.E.L.D. which was focused on Earth-bound threats. So, why would they be dealing with Wanda, who doesn’t have anything to do with outer space? Could this adaptation of the organization be taking on the previous duties of S.H.I.E.L.D. too?
We’ll likely get those answers when the show releases on Disney+ in the Spring of 2021.
