Avengers Endgame is a massive movie and it is obvious that there are many scrapped plans for a lot of characters. Given that the film included a five-year time gap, the possibilities and speculations are endless. One beloved character who almost went through a significant change in his life during the film was Don Cheadle’s James Rhodes a.k.a War Machine. In a report from Comicbook.com, writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely revealed that they planned a storyline where Rhodes would have become the Vice President of the United States.

We took it out because it didn’t have any story weight, but I believe that during one draft, in the five year jump, Rhodie became vice president. Vice President Rhodey.

Rhodey is no stranger in serving the US government since he is already a high ranking officer within the United States Air Force. We can also recall that he reported directly to the President under the Iron Patriot persona in Iron Man 3. This scrapped storyline would’ve been big as it signifies that a costumed hero can be elected into a major position in the government. This comes after the issue brought about by the Sokovia Accords in Captain America Civil War as well as the rift that we saw between Rhodes and Thunderbolt Ross in Avengers Infinity War.

Moreover, the two writers reiterated that none of their decisions from the last two Avengers films were part of the future plans for the franchise but it is simply contained within their own story.

It’s not like [Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige] said, ‘You know what, we had a meeting and we’re going to have these three streaming services, so let’s make sure…No, if anything, I don’t know what all the streaming shows are, but it feels like they might come off of Endgame in some ways, but at no point did anybody say, ‘That’s what we should do, so therefore, sprinkle that in.

Fans have been clamoring for a major role for Cheadle’s character ever since and a storyline where he is Vice President is a major way to go. Even if it was already a scrapped plan, the concept can always be revisited given the expanding nature of the MCU. In a post-Infinity Saga world where everyone is asking who will be the next Iron Man, what better time for Rhodey to step up and honor the legacy of his bestfriend by not just leading the Avengers but leading the country as well.
