As Marvel Studios starts its new journey into the world of mini-series on Disney+ this year, the team will also dip its feet into the world of animation for the first time ever in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Thanks to a new exclusive report from Variety, new information has been confirmed regarding that first venture away from live-action projects. The report reveals that Marvel Studios has chosen Québec City-based animation studio Squeeze to create five episodes for the Disney+ mini-series What If…?, which is set for a global release in the summer of 2021.
Squeeze has studios in both Québec City and Montreal in Canada, with a team of 150 people contributing to 3D animation projects since the company started back in 2011. They have teamed up previously with industry powerhouses like Universal, Illumination, WarnerMedia, and the video game company Ubisoft, and the company’s CEO and co-founder Denis Doré even offered a statement on his team’s decision to collaborate with Disney Marvel Studios on this new project.
Marvel was looking for a world-class animation studio to come up with a fresh and unique style that would be in keeping with their brand essence. We really clicked, right from our initial talks in Los Angeles last year, and they loved our proposal. I’m thrilled that our artists’ creativity and talent resonated so strongly in Hollywood.
What If…? is set to have 10 episodes in its first season with a second season already confirmed for the future, and while plot details have not been revealed, we know that the show is set to explore a number of alternate storylines and plot points from the MCU’s Infinity Saga and its most iconic characters to date. The MCU’s first run at an animated series is sure to bring something new to the table, especially with almost every single star from the first 23 movies confirmed to return to voice their animated characters. The show is set for a release on Disney+ in summer 2021, and the excitement for its release continues to increase exponentially by the day!
