It seems as though screenwriter Zak Penn is dipping his toe back into the Marvel screenplay business. Penn has had an illustrious career when it comes to working on Marvel projects (although one or two clunkers do exist if you ask diehard Marvel fans). His previous credits include being a writer or co-writer for X2: X-Men United, X-Men: The Last Stand, Elektra, The Incredible Hulk, and The Avengers. In addition to that, Penn has also been tied to the development of the sequel to DC’s Suicide Squad.
What is most curious about Penn getting back into developing Marvel screenplays is that he didn’t state whether or not this would be a movie that exists in the Marvel Cinematic Universe or Fox’s Marvel Universe. Lest most fans forget, the official merger of those two studios is still up in the air due to U.S. Government regulators still having to rule on the deal. (For more on that, see this article from back in January). There are still two scheduled Fox projects that are yet to be named that haven’t started any development yet. The others that are in development at Fox are X-Force, Doctor Doom, Gambit, and a Kitty Pride movie; all of which already have writers. Beyond Phase Three in the MCU, we know that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and a Spider-Man: Homecoming Sequel are confirmed. Other than that, all that we really know is that a script is already in the works for a Black Widow movie. However, it is assumed that we will see sequels to Dr. Strange, Black Panther, and Captain Marvel (how can’t there be a sequel to the still un-released movie in Phase 4?).
Penn declined to go into too much depth about the project but did state that he would find out how much he could reveal in a future interview. For now, let the speculation begin on what Marvel property he could be working on next.
