After fighting an onslought of people claiming that Zendaya‘s character in the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming film will in fact not be the MCU’s version of Mary Jane, but is in fact a character named Michelle, we received a small glimpse of what we can expect from her character. Trailers have shown her to be more of a Juno-type character that wears her emotions and quips on her sleeves. Thanks to the Disney Channel special for the upcoming release of Spider-Man: Homecoming featuring the former Disney star and Spider-Man himself, Tom Holland, we got a few more teases on what to expect from her character.

While the main love interest of the film is confirmed to be Liz Allen (Laura Harrier), a famous character from comics history and gained some more popularity thanks to her appearance on the animated show, Spectacular Spider-Man. This made some theorise that the character of Michelle would in fact turn out to be his most famous love-interest, Mary Jane, as the film has pushed actress Zendaya quite a lot back during her initial casting and she has a prominent place on the recently released posters.

An interesting thing to take from the special is that she does seem to have an affinity towards Peter and his friend Ned, played by Jacob Batalon. There seems to be a running gag that she consistently appears around them, even with some potential teases that she may know more about Peter than she is letting on. Some theories point to her being a student paid by Stark to keep an eye on him, others believing that she may in fact turn out to be the actual love interest in the film, as it takes a lot of inspiration from classic teenage romantic-comedies. The mystery surrounding her character and that of Donald Glover is rather interesting, as the trailers have been quite spoiler-heavy up to this point.

One could go quite crazy with the theory, as after they have repeadetly confirmed that the character will not turn out to be MJ, there are many other characters she could in fact turn out to be. The easiest take would be a de-aged version of Michele Gonzales, who he shared a flat with for some time and ended up hooking up with for some time. If one would go completely crazy with theories, her popping up wherever Spidey isand seeming to know something about his secret identity, maybe the MCU is embracing the more mystical side of their world by introducing a much younger version of Madame Webb. It would certainly come out of left field, but after the expansion of more mystical elements in this world thanks to Doctor StrangeIron Fist and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. it would be quite an interesting take. It would certailny open up the possibility to multiple dimensions playing a role in future Spider-Man films.

What are your thoughts on the matter? Who do you think Michelle is?
