What appeared to be a gag to moviegoers at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 actually carries a lot of emotional weight for Peter Quill (Chris Pratt). After paying tribute to his fallen foster father Yondu (Michael Rooker), Peter is given a Microsoft Zune that Yondu kept for Peter. The joke to us is “ha ha, the Zune totally failed against the iPod.” But according to Guardians writer/director James Gunn, the Zune will continue to have an important role in Vol. 3.
Speaking in a Facebook Q&A earlier today, Gunn responded to a question about the Zune:
Volume 1 and Volume 2 [of the “Awesome Mix”] have been Meredith’s [song] choices – her communication to Peter. … In Volume 3, the song choices will be Yondu communicating with Peter.
Peter Quill’s sorrowful backstory losing his mother as a child gave his arc in the first two films some emotional heft. Now with that arc closed after Vol. 2, the next installment of the series will move on from his mother to his sort-of-dad.
Previously, Gunn actually stated that he was initially hesitant to return for Vol. 3. Working with close friend Michael Rooker in every single one of his films since his directorial debut with Slither, Gunn was afraid of making a movie without him in it. We obviously know now that Gunn will write and direct Vol. 3 anyway.
And who knows – maybe Gunn will cheat somehow to get his friend back on the set. Vol. 3 is sure to involve Yondu’s effect on Peter’s life, so we could very well get some flashbacks with Yondu.
Do you think Yondu will show up somehow in Vol. 3? What songs do you hope to hear in the next Awesome Mix? Let us know!
